Making Tax Digital Is Here: Have You Registered Yet?

More Than 100,000 Taxpayers Still Need to Act

Making Tax Digital (MTD) is officially underway, yet recent analysis by the Low Incomes Tax Reform Group (LITRG) suggests that more than 100,000 taxpayers who are required to comply from April 2026 have still not registered.

Many of those affected are self-employed individuals and landlords who may not realise the new rules apply to them. With the first quarterly update deadline of 7 August 2026 fast approaching, now is the time to get ahead.

Who needs to comply?

From April 2026, MTD applies to individuals with more than £50,000of gross income from self-employment and/or property rental activities, based on their 2024/25 tax return. Importantly, the threshold is based on gross income, not profit, and self-employment and rental income are combined when assessing whether you qualify.

While HMRC has contacted many taxpayers expected to fall within the scope of MTD, not everyone will have received or recognised these messages. As a result, many people may still be unaware that they need to register, choose compatible software and start keeping digital records.

For most business owners and landlords, the biggest challenge isn't the quarterly submissions themselves but putting the right software and processes in place early to stay compliant throughout the year.
